Ethiopia is located in the Horn of Africa. It is a rugged country split by the Great Rift Valley. Ethiopia is a landlocked country surrounded by five neighbors: Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Sudan and Kenya. It is the second most populous country in Africa with 108 million and 70% of the population is under age 30. There are 88 different languages spoken, but the most common spoken is Amharic. Ethiopia is one of the world’s oldest known nations. Modern history has reflected the Italian occupation (1936-1941), the Marxist period (1974-1990), which saw harsh persecution of Christians, where many were martyred, but millions were won to Christ. Since 1991 Ethiopia has been a Democratic Republic divided into ten regions. The main export is coffee, which is thought to have originated in Ethiopia. War, famine and political corruption have hindered development and millions suffer malnutrition and tens of thousands continue to die due to lack of food. Many Ethiopians claim the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8) introduced Christianity to Ethiopia in the first century, but Christianity did not become officially recognized until 341 AD. The religious composition of Ethiopia is 40% Orthodox Christian, 20% Evangelical, 35% Muslim, and 5% Non-religious. This is God’s time for Ethiopia— it is harvest time! God is using dreams, visions, healings, His Word and His church planters to bring the good news of Jesus to Ethiopia and thousands are turning to Christ. Jesus said, “Do not say, four months more and then the harvest? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest” John 4:35. Are you willing to enter into the work of the harvest in Ethiopia? We invite you to join the work of the harvest in Ethiopia.
